Why do people poach?

Why do people become poachers?

Where is the poaching occuring? And what animal is being poached? Those answers make a difference.

For example, a redneck in America may be poaching deer to eat, or because he wants a chance at a great young buck with a nice rack of antlers so he can put it on his wall.

Or you may be talking about Rhinocerous in Africe, in which case they are poached for the horn alone.

Elephants for their ivory.

You see?

Where is your setting, and what is the animal?

Over here the most exciting things we have to poach are pheasants and hares. They make yummy dinner!

do you mean eggs and salmon?... or killing animals in protected/private areas?

first, 'cause they like it that way...

second, 'cause they don't respect authority or land ownership, or the lives of the poor critters they're murdering...

I am a strict vegetarian but I have no problem with ethical hunting. Carnivorism is a natural activity and there is nothing at all evil or inappropriate about it. Animals that are hunted at least have a fighting chance. They've lived a relatively normal life as they were intended to and if they happen to be the one that ends up in the cross hairs (please note that I think long-range hunting with high-powered rifles and scopes is NOT ethical. If you can't meet the animal on its own ground then you don't have any balls and you're a coward...at least use a shot gun or a bow and arrow) then they should have paid more attention. Survival of the fittest.

What is wholly unethical is the way in which animals are treated in the meat-production industry. Animals suffer unbelievable cruelty as a matter of course and people eat their hamburgers completely oblivious to the fact that their meal was quite literally tortured while it was alive.

I won't preach but I guarantee that 99% of people would refuse to eat the meat that comes from modern production methods if they had the chance to witness the cruelty and carnage first hand. Take a tour of a meat-packing plant sometime and you'll know precisely what I'm talking about.

I toured a chicken processing plant once.

It put me off meat for several hours.

I'm quite partial to fried, actually. With a sprinkle of salt, that is.
