This thread is becoming more and more ironic. It was originally a question about taking a punch - a very simple thing, really, that probably doesn't have much pull in the impact of the book; I doubt if this punch is a turning point. How come the thread has degraded into impotent squabbling? 92% of the people here are making things up, as insecure fiction writers would, to prove exactly what? We're really taking the punch now: getting slammed by someone's fiction only to roll back and throw out a fistful of blasphemy. These threads, with most people out here to try and establish something, somehow, only waste time - time we could spend writing. Just my thoughts...

Yes. Your statistics are a prime example.
I made nothing up, and I don't believe Kane is. In fact, from reading this thread, I can only think of one person who is making shit up as he goes along...

Nice to see that another thread has descended into bickering. And fyi, guys, Spiderman could SO whup Batman's ass.
To go back to the original question, there's no 'right' way to take punches to the head. There's no science to it, you just try to avoid getting hit in the face, because you look stupid with a broken nose and split lips. I know, I've been there.

I thought fighters (of many disciplines) learned to use an opponents aggression against them?
|
yeah, there are many ways to use one's agression against them.
Just thinking...if this argument was being carried out in person it would probably be much shorter and we'd need a lot more ice packs.
lol, I'd fight a boxer or any other fighter for fun, but I'd never fight over someone's point of view on a topic like this.

Sorry, I don't understand lol.
Back on the topic, I just got back from martial arts, and I asked a few of the instructors what they thought. It was odd, but the majority of the bigger ones seemed to be more confident with the idea of technique over pure, controlled aggression, while the few smaller ones seemed to go with controlled agression and physical ruthlessness in the face of a physical superior fighter such as a boxer is.
I should never have asked them though: they thought it was some sort of request; now they're getting in a bunch of their boxer friends to compare the techniques and attributes of our fighting styles and what not.

Get the ice packs! The argument IS moving into real life. Let us know how it goes, Hayden.
Nah, I just meant that you might not fight someone over the topic but I made you laugh. (you typed 'lol')
Okay, so there's been some bickering on the string but I've learned a lot. Even if some of it was a little conflicting. Still, it sure helps to have all of these insights for the next time I want to have a character in a fight.

Little short guys need to over compensate, so aggression and rage is a big thing with them. I should know, I am one, lol. Yep, just me and Joe Pesci. Though he'd take me in a fight any day.

That sounds awesome. I'd love to see it.
Though, from my experience, isn't the whole point of learning how to fight all about not having to fight? Wouldn't the best course of action be just to have both fighters hit the pub?
And, to swing this post onto topic, the best way to take a punch would depend on the location. As said, for the body, just try to brace and take it, for the face, or other appendage, try to move with the hit to minimize the impact.

Don't just try to brace and take it. If you do that, you're likely to get a busted rib or solar plexus or get the wind knocked out of you. React, moving away from the punch as it comes in the direction it would take you through momentum. =p
If you can't do that, THEN just brace for it.

If this turns into some sort of full scale war i'd like to wash my hands of it.
If any one's interested though, you can see what happened to my character by reading the end result in critique and advice (page 2 *sobs*). Basically he got the crap beaten into him but i tried to take the advice i've been given into account.

And thus.... closure. A punch, if taken unawares will hurt!

Yeah, discussions like these are good, so long as they don't get out of hand.

Yeah, that would be the best outcome, but not always an option lol.

I feel emotional. The thread has come to an end, and with it, the bickering. Where will I get my fix from now. Perhaps I'll head over to the Womens Rights thread in the debates section.
