Heh.
So yeah, anyone else have a hard time writing sex scenes? I used to be a dab hand at erotica but it's been a long time and now it's... difficult. My novel has scenes of erotica though the story doesn't center around it. Just curious as to other people's experiences with incorporating erotic scenes into their work.
Cheers,
Lindsay

I actually don't have any problem with it. If it happens, it's usually a natural thing I don't expect or plan for, which I think makes it sound better. If the characters lead to it instead of me planning on it happening way before they get to that point, it becomes easier to write.
Are you having problems with it entirely or is it with wording, incorporating it with the rest of the story, making it smoother for the characters...?

had no problem whatsoever writing sex scenes in my old life's works... i just used my own personal experience and took it up or down a notch or few, as the situation called for... fortunately, i was in my 40s and 50s at the time, and had plenty of current and past 'experience' [and wide variety of same], to draw on... if you want any help, just drop me a line and i can send you a couple of the xxxx-rated short stories that mysteriously survived the purge of my old life's work...
but only if you can convince me you're 'of age' or have a note from your mother!
love and hugs, maia

Maybe it's because my own sex life has come to a stalemate over the past year so I just haven't contemplated it much lately. Hmmmm... it's the wording I think since the scenes are extremely sensual and between women. It's the balance between sensuality and gratuitous sex play... no desire to sound like a romance novel or porno flick. And Maia, I am certainly of age and would love to see some of your work if you're willing to share. I will also research and read more erotica to see if I can't get my own creative juices flowing. Just need to grease the wheels methinks.

The problem I have with erotic scenes is not always the words, but my fear of what people will think. People may look at me thinking that I am playing out my fantasies (and in some scenes maybe I am), or people will look at my sick and demented characters and think that they represent me.

Well, stop having the problem. I wrote about a necrophiliac cannibal.

if you're that worried about it, use a pen name... i did for my triple-x-rated stuff, 'cause i still had small kids at the time... and also to separate it from my other writings... i actually used two pseudonyms, as well as my own name, for my published and to-be-published work...

The best sex scenes I've ever read never actually existed. They were all alluded to and confined to a paragraph at most.
You can even skip over the whole thing and just make mention of how two characters are naked in bed the next morning; your readers will make the connection.

The best sex scene I've ever read is in Stranger in a Strange Land. It's pure dialog.

I don't remember the specific scene.
I do remember Heinlein was able to bring Mike's empathic ability to life.
It's worth adding to your erotic study.
It's been twenty years or more, I may go back for a review myself.
I Will Fear No Evil is also worth a look. Heinlein put a male mind into a female body. Oh my did they have fun! If you can't fit in the full read, browse the third quarter of the book.

Hmmm excellent. I've completed the erotic scene though I know I will return for revision at a later date. In the meantime I'll brush up on some steamy literature. Thanks for your suggestions! (And thank you for sharing Maia!)
