Two Athletic Terms
I'm writing a short story right now which takes place in the Olympics and I can't find the names of these two objects.
1. That thing that sprinters put their feet in before the race starts. It has bent foot holsters.
2. The white pieces of paper that every athlete wears that has their number on it.

1. Starting blocks (google is your friend).
2. I couldn't find a specific name for the number thing, but I would guess you can simply classify it as an identification number.

I thought starting blocks were just for swimming. And I think the second one is just called a race number.

no, starting blocks are also used for foot races... they're metal foot braces that are actually affixed to the track, to give the runners something to push off from...
the ones used for swimming are very different... just a raised stand for the swimmers to dive off from... gives them a bit more height above the water, than diving in from the edge of the pool...

I know what the differences are.
I thought the blocks in swimming were called swimming blocks, and the metal foot braces were called something else. Clearly, no.
