Fashion, Rich Famlilies, New York City, and a whole lot more...

Alright, its about time I started researching for NaNoWriMo as close as it is cutting it. I have been fleshing my idea out, but I am having trouble with details. The story will take place in New York City, the first time I am even mentioning a real location in anything I have done. I am obviously in New York but that hardly means I am from the city of know much about it so bare with me, please? With so much to search through some links would be very helpful or straight out facts....

My main character is the heir to a famous fashion line, and I would like the headquarters (is it even called that in the bussiness world?) to be located in New York. Is there a famous fashion district in New York City, or perhaps an area famous in this area? I know Broadway is the musical area but I have always been at a loss for fashion.

Also, what DO rich people do with there time? Or the children of celeberties for that matter? My main character may be the heir but he hardly wants anything to do with it, but at the same time is unable to chase after his own ambitions. He lives off family wealth, but I am having a hard time figuring out what he actually does with himself. What are famous families like, aside media galore?

There is a rich-people-only type apartment near Central Park that I know of, but what other city locations are famous for these type of people to live in? I know nothing of famous people so I apologize in advance.
