Law Question: How Old to Serve Alcohol?

Hello there! I have a question concerning the law in America for a character in a story I am working on. How old does one need to be to serve alcoholic beverages in the states? For instance if a college student was 17 or 18 years old, could they work in a pub/restaurant where alcoholic beverages are served? I know that, at least in Virginia where I live, you have to be 21 to purchase alcoholic beverages. Does the same apply for serving?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
Allen

Once again, it depends where

I know here you only need to be 18 to serve, but 21 to buy.

Thanks again Drzava! I appreciate the help. I am in southwestern Virginia, by the way.

really? 21? It's 18 here in Australia. Is it like that all over America?

Yep. They need to be 21 to gamble, too. It's like bizarro world.

But you can join the army at 18! Old enough to serve and die for your country, but not old enough to drink!

I believe the law is that you need to be 18 to gamble, but 21 to gamble in a location that serves alcohol.

But, it is 18 to bartend here in Illinois...at least the southern parts.

Hayden seemed rather shocked...
In Belgium, you're by law allowed to drink alcohol as soon as you're 16, and even sooner when you're accompanied by your parents.

People in the military can drink at 18 here.

And in Texas it is similar to Belgium, minors can drink if they are with their parents, but they can't get drunk...
