Appearing lands, Islands etc
In mythology (common or otherwise) does anyone know of an appearing island or a place where many people have dissapeared (bermuda triangle etc) Or anything to do with this?
It seems a strange request but I just need to know.

There's that triangle in Alaska that natives believe people vanish into, might be worth a Google, if that's the type of thing you were wondering about...

the changing island of avalon, in the arthurian legend, is a classic... marion zimmer bradley's 'mists of avalon' was one of the best modern retellings...
and brigadoon is another charming classic... if you google for that, you should find links to similar folk tales...
and there's a tv series dealing with a magical island that comes and goes...

The first pioneers to settle in america disappeared. They left a note scratched out on a tree. It might not be what you're looking for but it's what I have.

According to the myth, the atlantians dissapeared with their island, i think that counts.
In the original question wasn't specifically stated the dissapeared people couldn't vanish all in one go...

Not that america story is exactly what I need. Its basically a place where I can put the doorway t another world which only appears in times of like dire need.

that was sir walter raleigh's colony on roanoke island, in what he named 'virginia' [after his sponsor bess, who was known as the 'virgin queen']... when the expedition leader [john white] returned three years later, there was no trace left of the 117 settlers...
the message was just one word: 'croatan' on a post... and the first 3 letters, 'CRO' carved on a tree...
