You could possibly write in the Flying Dutchman as a sort of island, it is an island for the sailors in the original story, in the sense that they are completely isolated from the rest of the world...

as the flying dutchman was a ship, i suppose you could consider it a 'floating island'...

and let us not forget james michener's eternally enchanted island of 'Bali Hai' that the musical 'south pacific' immortalized...

Like the Daphne in Umberto Eco's The Island of the Day Before, where the protagonist finds himself shipwrecked at sea and winds up stranded on a ship rather than an island.

One group of men claimed to have stumbled upon an uncharted island that seemed to appear before their very eyes. They explored it and came to the conclusion that it was Atlantis, but after they left they couldn't find it at the same coordinates again. A drunken fisherman story, to be sure, but it isn't like any REAL islands appear and disappear.

Also, Atlantis did exist you silly head. It's been romanticised, yes, but archaeologists are pretty sure it's an island inside the strait of Gibraltar that sunk beneath the water a long time ago due to a volcanic explosion and the ensuing earthquakes. The people of the island were very advanced for their time—houses had hot and cold running water, their pottery was hundreds of years ahead of its time, and I believe the city was built on a grid. The island was Crete, I believe. Now, this is just a theory, but so far it's the only plausible one and the only one that seems to fit the description set by Plato.

Doesn't Fantasy Island appear and disappear?

another that fits plato's description, is another greek island, thira [santorini], a great portion of which sank beneath the sea in an earthquake millennia ago... recent excavations on the island proper have unearthed some evidence to support the idea...

There's also a suggestion that it may have been off the coast of Spain. It's on here somewhere.

On the Atlantis subject, how can we really be sure that it didn't exist? I mean, if the island was destroyed by earthquakes / volcanoes and you add on the enormous time period between then and now, the possibility that is hidden beneath tons and tons of hardened volcanic ash and years and years of mud is very high. And the Athenians talked in there history about waging wars against the Atlanteans and even in Egyptian history the word Atlantis has popped up. But, then again, the story of Atlantis could very possibly be Plato's way of warning us as a society not to become too greedy. I guess it's just for the individual to decide if this is fiction or reality.
