past lives - past loves
Does anyone believe in past lives? the possibility that the person you were destined and chose to be with is someone that has been with you through the ages? -- ya extremely warm and fuzzy eh?
Im wondering about putting something like this in my story.
I am not going a religion route but it would be nice to think that a soul will continue once the body is gone.
I watched that movie the Notebook and the ending is obvious that they believe they will be together in the afterlife or be reunited on this earth in their next lives. This is not a new movie so - no spoiler , if you wanted to see it you would have by now I'm sure.
So post in that other thread about love --- then post here if your love is going to follow you forever and how you feel about it.

I don't believe in past lives, I do believe in beng reunited beyond death.
I think it's a beautiful idea, and use it if you hae the eloquence.

I think putting the idea in a story would be somewhat difficult, but if you can pull it off, kudos to you.
Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I think it's a good story element. Past lives being past loves could account for instant connections between couples. It could account for why, sometimes, people who get married on the day they meet actually make it work. It could account for a lot of things... I'm not married yet, but my fiance and I have been calling each other husband and wife for a long time now.

Yes, that was the direction I was thinking, it is not nessesary that you remember but it is just a feeling that is there. I think it is something I can work in , even if it is just mental dialogue with the main character. Its in the margins still at this point.

Well one thing I watched somewhere had an interesting idea like that. Only it was a bit different. It had a part that said something along the lines that twins were actually lovers in their past lives who comited suicide together. A bit creepy but an interesting concept.

i've had very personal experience/evidence that it could be, so can't discount the possibility... i was even writing a novel and a dramatic tv series based on my own knowledge of the phenomenon...
if you need help with your fictional version, feel free to email me...

You will no doubt here from me. Thanks. No matter which route I go , I would like to hear about your experience with it.
I love all that kind of stuff. When I was a kid I saw a movie with Orson Wells I think called "Beyond and Back" but that was more near death and see the light and relatives thing.

Thanks-- I have an idea for story
I came up with an excellent idea for a short story instead with elements of past lives. Not Romance , it just does not fit with my eventual novel.
I am going to visit a darker place with this.

One more thought
Now to make this re-incarnation concept work best.
Should I have a birth immediatly follow a death , or can there be some time between the death?
I am currently having a period of minutes but then again, did the re-incarnation take place at conception or birth?
Maybe I should have 9 months?
I always get great answers here so , I am going to consider all opinions then decide what route I will go. Not like I have to stick to some re-incarnation rule!

since the infant in the womb has been proven to experience many of the basics of 'life' and even be able to 'recall' things that have taken place 'outside' while 'in' there, i'd have to assume that reincarnation would occur at, or not too long after conception, and not at birth...
one of my daughters, in a session with a therapist who used hypnosis, 'recalled' suddenly feeling as if she was falling and fearing she would die, while in a 'dark, warm, safe' place... she never knew that i had been knocked down by her father, and feared for my life and hers at that moment [i was 7-8 months pregnant], as he was a big, scary, potentially-violent guy!...
it's also believed by many who take reincarnation seriously, that a soul [i call it 'intellessence'] can be in some kind of 'waiting' state for certain periods of time, before being 'acquired' by a new physical self...
one of my younger sisters actually seems to have had a prior life that ended some weeks before her birth [i was able to document the circumstances]... i discovered this while using hypnosis to find out why she'd always felt sure that she was not our parents' child... as i talked her into the 'state' that would allow me to explore her early years, i was hit with an intensely 'real' vision of her prior self, just before she died... the details gibed with all sorts of things that had puzzled us about her and what we thought were her 'emotional problems'...
so, i can't disbelieve the concept of some of us having had prior 'lives'...

No it hasn't... No one remembers stuff from this early on. Very few people remember anything before two years of age, even.

Thanks, I did email you before but perhaps it got lost in junk mail.
I hope my post did not give you the impression of mocking the fact that people believe this. I am not fully a believer in it myself. Its a nice thought and if my story does what it suppose to, people will go , well maybe that could happen.
For my story though you make the case for me to go with the murder/suicide scene to be of perhaps a 9 months to a year before the next 3 are born. I am working on it now but please feel free to find it in the short story forum just the beginning of it-- shameless self promotion I know
