Horse-Race Lingo?

Just call me stupid--I've been to horse races before, but I never really understood them. Yes, they run around a track and try to win the race--but what do they win? Trophies or Ribbons? I think it's both, but if someone could give me the details on a basic horse race, I'd appreciate it

If there are any specific terms used, please also fill me in. I don't really need them for any particular purpose--my characters are going to know less about horses than I do--however, I'm going for humor. So let me know what you know

Also, while I have your attention--are horses entered into races or registered? how technical is the process--if anyone knows..

Thanks!!

MONEY, honey!... the trophies for major races are nice, but it's the cold hard cash that pays for race horses' oats and royal treatment...

too many to list here... just google for a 'race track glossary' and you should find all you never knew you never needed to know...

...both... they are registered at birth, in whatever breeder's ass'n is relevant, and entered in races... for the major races, they have to qualify... you can google for the details...

...very!... there are all sorts of technical requirements in all aspects of breeding and racing... and the oversight is intense, to thwart doping and all the other illegal methods used to ensure the desired result [win or lose]... there's big bucks in racing, as witness all those idiots putting the rent money on the nose of a nag, in hopes of winning big... 99.999% of 'em only lose big... the owners and track management are the only winners here... and owners can lose big, as well... it's a very chancy business...

hope this helps some... hugs, maia

Yes, that does help. Thank you a bunch! I tried doing some research myself, but it was hard to find anything without knowing what to look for! I will google those things and see what I can find

Thanks again!!
