1950's British Cars

I'm looking at pages and pages of cars and figured it would be easier to find this from someone who knows it properly.

Imagine I have a character in 1950's England (I was thinking maybe late 40's but I want a bit more distance from WW2) who is rich (likely from inheritance, such as Batman/Bruce Wayne, rich and nothing better to do than dress up as a bat at night ) - living in a nice manor with a butler and all that - now what kind of car would they have?

Now this character is a kind of adventurer, so I was thinking something along the lines of a Land Rover Series 1... but wanted something with perhaps more elegance... more than likely they'd have more than one car though.

Something not too sporty for getting to and fro with style... Jaguar perhaps... Rolls Royce were too elegant, Aston Martin too sporty....

I'm not really sure, any ideas anyone? Is it actually legal to refer to a real car manufacturer/model or is it not really too important?

Have you read any fiction from this particular period? Any similar fiction? If so, what cars get mentioned then. I'm not a car expert but, on a recent visit to a Museum of Transport, I saw a number of smart vehicles - probably the type you are looking for - of which the manufacturers have been consigned to the annals. I'm sorry that I can't give you the names of any cars but to be honest cars don't interest me. Go exotic and find a rare car; there's less enthusiasts to spot your mistakes.

Of course it's legal. Stories are full of brands these days. Careful how you portray them though.
