Murder suspect

Can anyone tell me what the proceedure is if you're a suspect for a murder?

I have a possible idea that my character's fingerprints will be found at the scene of a murder. If this happens, will she be arrested immeadiatly? Will she be taken in for questioning? Kept over night?
Would the police only know who she is if she's been arrested before?

Sorry about my silly questions, and i hope someone can help

Disclaimer: I'm in no way an axpert in this.

If her prints are found and identified, she'll be questioned (not necesarrily under arrest, not even at a police station). If there's any other (surcomstantial) evidence against her, or she's just very suspicious in her answers (or not co-operative), depending on the country, she could be detained anything between 24 and 7 days (I'm not familiar with the names of the arrest bills or the correct prosedure i.e. who has to sign them (judge, inquiry judge, ...)

There are some ways the police can have her fingerprints without her being arrested before. In America, for example, you have to have your prints taken when you get a driver's license (if I'm not mistaking). Furthermore can they have her prints because she was involved in another case, or she had a confidential position (i.e. working for the ministery and such (in some countries, and I'm not sure which ones), she's been on the police force or in the army, or they took her fingerprints when she was questioned because in some way she's linked with the victim (but this depends on your story).

There are a lot of 'if's in here, but I hoped I helped a bit scetching it out. Maybe if you tel in which country your story takes place, people can provide more precise information.
Regards
Pam
