But you should start with your basic conflict, it's only the resolution that should be kept till the end. And even then, there should have been sufficient forshadowing wherby the reader will kick his or herself and say why didn't I see that end coming. At least, that's the ideal I have for the novels I enjoy.
Start as near to the end as possible.

If you insist on writing a fantasy novel (not my favourite genre!) then you could look at what Astrologers know about them. Did you know that all of the star signs are derived from the Air, Water, Earth, Fire combined with Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable for example?

There was a book using the theme of the elements. I believe the title was The Elementals or something like that. Sorry I can't recall the author.
