Researching medical and police

Got a book I'm concepting right now that I need to do a bunch of research on. I don't need to suddenly know as much as an MD would, but I certainly need to get a pretty good laymen's knowledge of a few key subjects. Or at least a pretty decent understanding. The areas I need to research are:

1. Cancer
2. Tumors
3. Medical care and practices
4. Police procedures
5. Police investigative methods and procedures.
6. Forensics.
7. Medical disposal of bio hazards.

That's the general basics of what I'm going to have to research. What would be the best way to attack this and the best sources for information about each of these subjects? I've already considered interviewing the state police and several doctors at local hospitals for info, but I was curious if there was other places to get info and the best ways to go about getting them.

i agree that aside from in-person interviews of folks in the field, googling is your best source of info on just about anything...

and, of course, there's always that old standby, the public library!... the computer version of the outmoded card catalog will help you find books [fiction and non] that deal with whatever subjects you're interested in, so you can see how other writers tackled them and pick their in-print brains for info they ferreted out...
