And while reading, keep in mind the people of the past were people, just like us. Too many 'histories' have been written by those with agendas and/or a cultural bias that assume those of the past were somehow inferior to those around today.
And virtually ALL of them are written by the winners of battles, so, for example, the hebrews are presented as God's people gaining their rightful place in Caanan from the godless or heathens, but the peoples already there would have had a very different story of primitive barbaric nomads coming out of the desert & killing, pillaging & raping a peaceful civilisation.
Also, keep in mind, magic is just science you don't know yet.
