Bear Psychology

I need to know how bears perceive their surroundings, how their thoughts are structured, and especially the way they perceive their own memory, their concept of time, and their perception of themselves.

I tried searching Google, but all that came up was how to behave around a bear for a human.

obviously, no one, no matter how much an expert on bear behavior they may be, can really answer those questions... only a bear can!

the best you can do is check out bear behavior and then come up with your own concept of why bears behave that way...

read 'watership down' to see how beautifully richard addams did that with rabbits...

hope this helps a bit... hugs, maia

Addams wrote another book about a bear...

We had bears in our yard this last year. I think they think in very base terms:

"Mmmm, apple tree, no dog, broken fence, mmm, another apple tree, grrrr! there's a human standing over there, mmm, apples!, mmm, grapes!, grrr, that human, better go now." [wait 15 minutes, repeat]

There's an amazing documentary on bears by the NFB (national film board) of Canada. It's called "All About Bears" and it explores the characteristics and habits of bears in their natural habitats. It is based on Grizzley and Black Bears. There's also some info about 'spoiled' bears, ones that have become accustomed to humans. I think that's really the only way to try to figure them out. They are smart as well, but their main goals seem to be food, sex, and sleep. Not always in that order either. There's also a very cool film from around 1986 called 'Bear'. It could give you some insight. Hope that helps a bit.

Like said before about the most you can do is read up on their behavior and make your own educated guesses.

I think they are quite curious and like to investigate new things they see.
I saw a documentary in which they found the hidden cameras and ended up sniffing, clawing and biting them.
