The Insane Asylum

What's it like there? Do they have cells? Is there some kind of reservation involved? Do they just drag insane people in or something?

Thanks in advance!

Half There
It depends. For some, it's sort of like an old folk's home. For the criminally insane, it's a prison with psychiatrist.
I know there are lots of good sources out there.

What about the in-between kind? Not criminals, but still very insane?

Rico is an unknown quantity at this point
Not overly pleasant by any means, but livable in. Lots of therapy, and depending on the condition and the cause, medication. They're not cells, they look mostly like hospital rooms. do you need reservations? no, most people don't plan on ever needing to go to one. And they don't physically DRAG people in...though sometimes they have to use a little force...but no real violence, sedation is used if the patients get too violent

to be committed, a non-criminal has to be certified in need of in-care treatment by a panel of doctors... the number varies from state to state...

in other words, you can't just be committed to an institution because your husband or wife wants to get you out of the house... a court hearing will be held in which the person to be committed can do his/her best to prove they're not any crazier than those wanting to put them away...

and, depending on what country it is, and how much the patient's family can afford, the conditions can range from medievally horrific to luxurious...

Depends on location (country) and time frame. Things have changed and evolving still.
What do you mean by insane exactly - it isn't a term often used these days.

One of my good friends was the director at a mental facility called Mountain Crest until about a year ago. At that one, they received a lot of suicidal people. They didn't turn anyone away, even if they had no money or insurance, so homeless people would turn themselves in on the coldest nights. Some people were taken there by the police for "observation".

There was a fair amount of freedom there if you weren't dangerous to yourself or others. Yes, the rooms lock from the outside, and they can strap you to a bed. If a patient became dangerous, they would have to do a "takedown," the thing my friend hated the most (and why he most wanted out of that job); several people, the bigger the better, would tackle the subject and inject them with a sedative, then get them to a bed. Takedowns happened 2 or 3 times per week.

If you check your phone book for mental facilities, you could probably tour a local facility "for a project you are working on".
