Stages in the Mafia?

What kind of jobs would the Mafia/Mafiya trust with a stranger?
I know you start out as a message runner, and keep getting promoted until you are guarding the don.

I'm just kinda curious, I'm not writing a book on the Mafiya anytime soon.

Read up on Henry Hill. Started out very low, an errand boy more or less. Because of his Irish/Italian heritage, he was never a "made" member of the Mafia. Here's a start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Hill

'mafiya' is the russian version of the sicilian 'mafia'... so, which one are you referring to?... they're not structured the same way at all...

and, 'guarding the don' isn't one of the highest levels in the sicilian hierarchy... that's just a glorified goon job, and nothing near as 'important' as managing an entire area of the don's 'empire'...

and, NOTHING would be trusted to a 'stranger' in the sicilian mafia... there has to be a blood connection or some other near-as-close one...

how do i know?... i'm italian/sicilian, lived in vegas during the mob's heyday in the 70/80s and had mobsters for neighbors... [see 'hollywood homicide' in the essay section of my site for the true story behind that piece of garbage, 'casino']...

Ah...I always wondered about the variation in spelling. Kind of makes sense now.
And I was talking about the italian/sicilian mafia...

Thanks for the info and the interesting link.

I'm going to go read your essay, Mammamaia.

Ethanael.

Alright...I'm going to try to figure out what you said based on latin expressions...

I know the last part was "love and hugs, Mammamaia" or something to that effect...

'ragazzo'...Couldn't guess it...Looked it up, "boy"

My first impression of the word 'niente' is a negative, like 'nothing' or 'lesser'...

I'm sure I missed something.
I've got no clue what you just said, Mammamaia...

Ilan Bouchard is an unknown quantity at this point
Just a guess, but did it mean something like, "It was nothing," or a loose translation of "you're welcome"?
