Can it grow in Texas and the American south in general, or is the climate too warm? Does it only grow wild in Europe? How would you care for a hemlock plant?

Water hemlock contains cicutoxin, a potent, noncompetitive gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor antagonist. Using a rat model, Uwai et al showed that cicutoxin is an antagonist of GABA-mediated chloride channels. Cicutoxin rapidly produces GI symptoms (nausea, emesis, abdominal pain) typically within 60 minutes of ingestion. CNS excitation leads to tremor and seizures, often refractory to therapy. A single bite of the root, which contains the highest concentration of cicutoxin, has been reported to kill an adult.


Poison hemlock has been introducted into the US, and water hemlock is found in central and east Texas. I guess I should have just googled, but now I have a few extra posts

So the official verdict is:

poison hemlock grows usually in the north and in Canada, and is found in wooded areas. Water hemlock is found all across America near water (hence the name), in marshy areas, streams, and is also near drainage ditches. One bite to the root is enough to kill an adult.


So I had better just stick to a nibble.
