The Truth About Troy

I was wondering what anyone knew about the fact and fiction invloved in the Trojan War. I'm thinking about writing a story about it and I want to know what I can safely talk about. What characters involved in the war can be proven historically? Are there any other historical records besides Homer's epics that can prove the occurence of the war? Tell me what you guys know.

I recall seeing a documentary program on tv a little while ago that talked about the discovery of the site that they thought was Troy a while ago and they are now digging again there.

Try this site for leads on what is known about the actual events/history: http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/troia/eng/

Also, keep in mind that Homer did not exist in the way an author does. The Epics are a collection of stories and myth that were written over several centuries. They were bound together and attributed authorship to a fictional author, naming him Homer. Whether there was at one point a blind bard named Homer wandering around ancient Mesopotamia is not known, but he didn't write those stories. So, it makes it hard to decipher fiction from reality when regarding those stories. The written work is also very different from the movie, or perhaps you've read them already.

I didn't know that.

I've learnt something new today.
