I would like the opinon's of anyone who is willing to give me their idea of total control over a population on a planet wide scale or larger. I am not talking about controlling the size of a population but instead ways to control a populations royality to the government which governs it. In more simple terms, what is your idea on how to get a population to follow the laws that are set forth by its government, without force?

Also do a Google search on "Utopian Fiction". There is a thread in Books and Authors about a book called Utopia, by St Thomas More, where I've gone on a little about Utopian Theory. That might prove interesting.

In a practical sense there is no way to obtain the result you are looking for without force. The force applied needn't be military though.

A guy by the name of Michel Foucault once theorised on the perfect prison. He called it the panopitcon (put that in Google and see what happens). Basically the prison is a round building with all the cells point inwards. There is a watchtower in the centre. The idea is that the prisoners can't see each other, but are always open to observation from the watchtower. While they don't know if they're being watched, they know that they might be.

The theory basically states that if people believe that they might be being watched, or that they could possibly be watched, they will act as if they are always being watched (which needn't be true).

In a post-modern city this theory no longer works, because the sheer size of the population makes the act of watching too difficult and unlikely.

well, at the very beginning when the gov't takes absolute control, the population must believe that their security and very survivial lies in the hands of the gov't. In other words, some really bad stuff must be happening for a totalitarian gov't to take over and to win a people's love. think of russia in the 1920's. corruptness within the autocracy and so the rule of the bolsheviks looked like a great idea. that's why for quite a while, many people within the soviet union felt that lenin's rule was necessary.

after that, in the ensuing generations, propaganda must begin from a very early age. The most important thing is to not allow the youngsters to imagine what life would be like without absolute control. that would be easier in a worldwide totalitarian gov't b/c there would be no chance of outside informataion poisoning the mind of the youth. so, through intense propaganda and quick suppression of any dissenters (i know you said no violence, but that's not really completely possible).

like it has been suggested earlier, read books like 1984 and brave new world. Another thing to look into to reveal what NOT to do is to use the soviet union as an example. if you need more help on that last part, tell me so and i will be glad to stuff useless information into your skull.
