Winnipeg River Canoeing

It sounds like we don't have too many astrophysicists in our midst, but I'll leave the stellar post for a while to see if I get lucky.

I'm also interested in whether anyone has gone canoeing on the Winnipeg between Lake/Lac Winnipeg and the Lake-of-the-Woods. Specifically, has anyone canoed upstream? Is this even possible with the currents? Does the time of year make a difference? Is there a better boat type; raft, kayak?

What kind of landscape borders the river? Hilly, rocky, flat? Thick forest, grassland? What kind of wildlife would you see?

Anything would help and if you think I really need to see it to write about it, any help on tours or where I could start would be helpful. Please note that if you do decide to recommend that I go there, the more compelling the argument the better as I will be using whatever you say to convince my wife that the trip is critical.
