Need Foreign Names

I asked this in one my posts under my "Fiction" thread (I hadn't looked in the main forum directory, so hadn't found this one yet). I'll try to post things in the right forum after this

Anyway, I've been "Googling" trying to find Russian and Korean names. I'm finding some, but not the parts I need to know. Most are dealing with just first names, so I have two "name" questions.

First, I've come up with the Korean name "Kim Kyung-Soon." If I read it right, Korean names put the surname first, and the given name last. If so, "Kyung-Soon" is his (her?) first name, and Kim is the last name. Is this a legitimte male Korean name?

Second, I need some examples of first and last Russian ladies names. Any ideas?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Try http://www.babynamesworld.com/ and do an Advanced Search, choosing gender and national origin. They have Korean and Russian names.

Formation and etiquette for Korean names:
http://www.asiabusinesstoday.org/travel/bp_korea.cfm

I think there's a feminine form for the Russian surnames - an 'a' ending? Not sure on that.

Perhaps a look through Russian and Korean newspapers online would suggest some common names.

Here are some real Korean names from a sales database:

Joo-Yong Park
Baik Seong-Ki
Kim Shung-Whan

When doing business with the U.S., they know to reverse the name order (like in a mailing form). "Lee," "Park," and "Kim," are some of the most popular "last" names.

Here are names of great Russian ballet artists:

Grigorovich, Yuri Nikolayevich
Karsavina, Tamara Platonovna
Kschessinskaya, Mathilde-Maria Feliksovna
Pavlova, Anna Pavlovna
Preobrazhenskaya, Olga Yosifovna
Sergeyev, Nicholai Grigoryevich
Sergeyev, Konstantin Mikhailovich
Ulanova, Galina Sergeyevna
Vaganova, Agrippina Yakovlevna

All the female first names are obvious: Olga, Anna, Mathilde-Maria, Galina, Agrippina. Marina is a very popular name, too.

I don't have anything on the Korean names but I have a site with a list of Russian names from literary sources. The splash page says there are over 25,000. They are listed alphabetically and include their meanings or roots.

Here's the link: http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/

Have fun.

Just a quick comment on Russian names. Beside the family name, Russians take a patronym, too. "Preobrazhenskaya, Olga Yosifovna" means that:

-Olga is the given name,
-Preobrazhenskaya is the family name, and
-Yosifovna is the patronym,

that is, the name of Olga's father was Yosif. In the same way, "Sergeyev, Nicholai Grigoryevich" means that Nicholai's father was called Grigori.

The patronym's ending for women is "-vna" and for men is "-vich." Avoid misusing them, or else you'll get unexpected reactions

Thanks for the other info

I appreciate it, but I don't want a "last name" ("family name") as long as that one. My Russian lady has only about two lines in my story and she won't appear again. Still, I'm happy to know this much. It will help me to come up with a "believeable" Russian lady's name. Thanks for posting!!

Best........Larry
