since we are talking about a weapon that does not exist.....oh, wait no we're not.
This weapon does exist. It is used as part of the Indian martial arts (as in India, not Native American), and is called the Urumi - about 3-5 feet long, and can be worn as a belt.
They are very difficult to use w/o cutting yourself, so they have not gained as much popularity as, say, a katana. I first learned about it from a co-worker whose grandfather was a local master of the weapon, and have since seen a video clip of someone wielding one on a rerun of Ripley's Believe It or Not TV show.
sadly, this is the best pic I could find:

I did find this description, which has some good information:
"There is one weapon however that very much deserves highlighting and this is the URUMI or 'flexible sword'. This is the weapon wielded by a practioner of KALARIPAYATTU when they reach the very pinnacle of their profession. This flexible sword functions like a whip, has a spring like action and can be worn around the waist like a belt when not being used (no thanks!). Some sources I read say that this weapon was developed and mastered by a female master/mistress of KALARIPAYATTU some 2000 years ago. In fact there are many sources describing the prominence of women in this MA form. You can see a photo of the URUMI sword in use (two guys on a sand dune/beach) about 2/3s of the way down the above obsidian link, under a posting by someone called Roshan.
Something which I've read about the URUMI is that is also comes in the form of a razor sharp spring/coil that stretches up to 12 feet long. I quote one description: >"Urumi - A spring sword, consisting of two or three strips of metal with sharpened edges, held together by a handle at either end. The urumi, which appears to be unique to South India, is utilised by twirling it around the body at speed, while turning to confuse the opponent."<END
This can also be duel wielded and both the URUMI are used in a similar fashion to the way an olympic gymnast would use their ribbon on the floor routine. Apparently the URUMI in this form takes off body parts as if they were made of butter. Katana's just seems like a joke after that!!! (I haven't been able to find any pictures of the weapon in this form however.)"
