Fighting styles and weapons training

hello I just joined this site today. I am seeking information about a weapon that does not exsist on earth but could be made. The weapon is called a whip blade. The best way to describe it is to take a long sword make its blade length six feet and then make it so that the blade is able to just like a whip. The general idea I had while comming up with this weapon is that it would be used for assassins. Even though I have this nice weapon, I am not sure what types of fighting can be done with it or how one would go about training with such a dangerous weapon without hurting them self or anyone around them.

Also the ones who are trying to learn how to use the weapons are between 7 and 10 earth years of age.

Any info about fighting and training styles with such a weapon would be very helpful.

No I have not ever played it. Though after looking at the Soul Calibur 2 website, I did find a weapon that is somewhat similar to the one which I described, the snake sword as its called in Soul Calibur 2 is somewhat the same as the whip blade. However the whip blade is covered in blades around the outside. The snake sword has a few blades then coil and a few more blades again. With the whip blade the coil cannot be seen, the visible weapon is coverd in blades while under the surface is the bending coil which allows it to move and crack like a whip.

Ghost,

Since you are talking about a weapon that does not exist, you are free to do just about anything you wish. That goes for the art of fighting used with the weapon, the ages in which students learn the weapon, etc...
A point of reference might be looking at different styles of whips. They are probably going to be the closest thing to what you are dreaming up.
The door is wide open on this one, have fun with it. Let me know how things turn out. Message me if you need any further help or need to bounce ideas back and forth.

Ben

since we are talking about a weapon that does not exist.....oh, wait no we're not.

This weapon does exist. It is used as part of the Indian martial arts (as in India, not Native American), and is called the Urumi - about 3-5 feet long, and can be worn as a belt.

They are very difficult to use w/o cutting yourself, so they have not gained as much popularity as, say, a katana. I first learned about it from a co-worker whose grandfather was a local master of the weapon, and have since seen a video clip of someone wielding one on a rerun of Ripley's Believe It or Not TV show.

sadly, this is the best pic I could find:

edit: link below provides a much better picture:

I did find this description, which has some good information:
"There is one weapon however that very much deserves highlighting and this is the URUMI or 'flexible sword'. This is the weapon wielded by a practioner of KALARIPAYATTU when they reach the very pinnacle of their profession. This flexible sword functions like a whip, has a spring like action and can be worn around the waist like a belt when not being used (no thanks!). Some sources I read say that this weapon was developed and mastered by a female master/mistress of KALARIPAYATTU some 2000 years ago. In fact there are many sources describing the prominence of women in this MA form. You can see a photo of the URUMI sword in use (two guys on a sand dune/beach) about 2/3s of the way down the above obsidian link, under a posting by someone called Roshan.

Something which I've read about the URUMI is that is also comes in the form of a razor sharp spring/coil that stretches up to 12 feet long. I quote one description: >"Urumi - A spring sword, consisting of two or three strips of metal with sharpened edges, held together by a handle at either end. The urumi, which appears to be unique to South India, is utilised by twirling it around the body at speed, while turning to confuse the opponent."<END

This can also be duel wielded and both the URUMI are used in a similar fashion to the way an olympic gymnast would use their ribbon on the floor routine. Apparently the URUMI in this form takes off body parts as if they were made of butter. Katana's just seems like a joke after that!!! (I haven't been able to find any pictures of the weapon in this form however.)"
