Caves?
Just wanted to know, is it possible for it to be humid in a cave? One that's a fair way underground? If not, would it be possible if there was some sort of nearby opening to the outside world?
Thank you in advance

From a Google on Spelunking plus Humidity:
"Batteries will discharge very fast, because of the high humidity and the low temperature..."
"Temperature is a constant 58°F with 90% to 105% humidity...."
http://www.isgs.uiuc.edu/tours/outliers/livinglab.htm describes the conditions in four zones, from the entrance to a dark underground, with growing humidity.

Have you ever been down inside Carlsbad Caverns? Even tho it is fairly cool down there, it is quite humid.

Well, let's take a look at what a cavern is; basically, a fairly large underground cavity.
What causes this?
Water. Years upon years of dripping water will carve out the rock, leaving all the odd shapes and formations. Same thing for canyons--in fact, picture a canyon with a roof.
Seeing as water plays so large a part, it makes sense that it should remain a constant. Most caverns are also considered 'live', meaning the water is still working. What you see when you visit one is the result of thousands of years already. Thus, the topography will have changed in another thousand years or so.
For what it's worth...

Hi bluetit, not only are caves very humid but very cold as well I used to go cave exploring on Vancouver Island, and those were full of water deposits, actually most of the areas that we covered were ice, tunnels were ice, ground was rock and ice. I think my favorite thing about them were the big white spiders that lived in the dark.
Best of luck on your research.
Kimberly
