Religion in Russia?

I don't fully understand the effects of Soviet-Russia on religion. From everything I have gathered, communism and religion do not get along, and therefore during the 1900's religion should have be largely bred out of Russia.

Yet I've seen on television rich, lavish places of worship in and around Moscow and even St. Petersburgh.

Which religion is this? How did it survive a century of socialism? What percentage of Russian's worship it?

Any help is appreciated.

teflon
Yes, the country is full of the golden onion domes. What's puzzling is the exponential growth in church attendance has been paralleled by violence that is unlike the religious nation--petty murders, murderous competition, the unrestrained promiscuity, parents pimping daughters, the dog-eat-dog life...What religion is that? Usher in a new party, the Party of Church Attendance ...

eleutheromaniac is an unknown quantity at this point
Religion never truly left Russia, and when his people's motivation was waning during WWII, Stalin would often use religion as a means to an end....as with all political leaders, something is only wrong until you can make some use of it.

There are various religions throughout Russia, but the main or official religion is Russian Orthodox. One of the main differences between the Russian Orthodox and Roman Catholic Church is the use of the Julian Calender in favour of the Gregorian calender with regards to religious holy days. Also, you may notice Russian women wearing kerchiefs, this is also related to Russian Orthodox belief (similar, though not as extreme, as the muslim burka).

Dostoevsky's writings, although obviously somewhat out of date, give some interesting insights into the relationship between Russians and their religious faith.
