Scotland in 17th century

I am from Scotland, but I know little about the culture, and goings on of the early 17th century Scotland, and, since my fantasy novel is set back then, I am in need of intensive knowledge of that era.

Firstly, I would like to know of the priviligies of the youngest son in a family. I know that the oldest sibling inherits the lands and riches, and sometimes follows in their fathers footsteps, but what about the youngest?? As far as I know (correct me if I am wrong) he inherits nothing of the family fortune, and has to fend for himself?

Since my character is the youngest of a privilaged and rich family, I was wondering what you happen to him? He is 18, would he be sent off to University? Or could he follow in his fathers footsteps as well??

Also, the oldest son in my novel, Arthur, is getting married -- what are the traditions?? Does the two families come together and decided if they are to get married, or can the male pick a wife of his own accord?

In my novel, the wife has come to live in the family household, with her new husband (whom she hates) -- I know this was not comman practice, but can it written in the novel, without it sounding too unrealistic??

Please help, as I cannot find the correct information!

Thanks!!!! Kate

Hi Kate! I can't answer your questions, but if you go
to your local town council (not sure what they're called
in Scotland, which is sad because I still have family
there and should know better, lol) but they have staff
who should be glad to help you research for your
novel. Also, the library would have a wealth of info
and even the librarian might be extremely knowledgable.

I know, in this day and age we all want to use the
internet, but let's not forget what great resources already
exist out there in the "hard copy" world!

GL on the novel...are we going to get to preview it here
when you've got some stuff written?
