Names
I need an idea for a name for a character in a fantasy novel I am writing.
The character is half-demon half-human and so a evil name would be cool, at the moment I have Isaac. Pretty lame.
I have a girl's name: Tierce Luanj (luanj being a play on words for 'le ange' french for 'the angel' and tierce being that time inbetween dawn and noon) which is allright I think.
Any ideas for a name for the male character currently named Isaac?
Thanks for your help.

Guttural names with lots of a's and u's are good for male charactars. Raif Stum, Darth Vader, but I like your girls name. You should pick the name I think and as a fantasy characater perhaps you could do the same with the male as you did with the female. What about the Spanish for devil or Diablo? Or since he's a daemon what about Damian or Damon or something that gives a bit of his character as well. Soemtimes I se spelling mistakes that I think look like good fantasy names. What about Se? Damon Se Good luck mick

Thanks for your help.
Damian sounds good, and Damon. I'll try looking in my spanish and latin dictionaries, latin's a good language for names (like Fortissimus Caelestis ).
Thanks again.

There is a site, SeventhSanctum.com, that has a evil name generator. Some are just completely useless but sometimes can get a good one.

I look at stuff like ketchup bottles or stupid things like that to find names. Just change a bit around.

Actually, I see nothing wrong with Isaac. . . sometimes when the reader sees a name that is obviously evil-sounding on an obviously evil-acting character, they think it's cheesy. But when you have something innocent like "Isaac", it almost makes the character scarier just because it's so unnerving to the reader. Then again, if you really want to change it, I do like Damian. That sounds good. ^_^

I agree. You could try something ironic, and pick a biblical name, Joshua, Joseph, etc. I think Daemon/Damian is a good name for a demon, but it has been done, and often (the Omen, Anne Bishop's Black Jewels books, the list goes on). I thought your female name was completely original, and I think you should try something like that. Try basing it on dark or night, e.g. Nicht Se

There is a site to find Latin root words from English:

I've just named a ha;f-demon character Axis. Though that probably doesn't help.

If you want to go with a cool-sounding, mysterious and slightly dark name, I'd go with Isiah. It sounds a little like Isaac (but better), it's got a nice biblical ring to it, and frankly, it's awesome.
Talie: Avoid the name Axis. Or just avoid the Axis trilogy, by Sara Douglass. Not bad books, but a guy with an axe called Axis? Who leads the legendary army 'The BattleAxes'? Don't make me laugh. HAH!

OH MY GOD! What have I done.
Sara Douglas is a strange case, because her first three books were ordinary, her next three were bad, and the three after that were brilliant (The Crucible), and the first two books of The Troy Game are extraordinary.
But yes, I think now I'll change that name.
But I get really tied up with names. When I first imagine a character, they get a name, and I find it really difficult to envision them with a different one.
I think I've said somewhere else that I was writing about my main hero (Talia Brie) for about four years before I discovered Talia is a girl's name.

Isaac quite literally means 'laughter'
unless it's a laughing diabolic daemon......

I love names and often I can spend great deal of time figuring out the perfect names for some characters. I actually write down names in a wholly separate list from my regular notes, because a good and fascinating name can make my imagination totally wild. Of course, there is the chance of overdoing it - making names too apparent and thus, ridiculous.
I for one haven't really understood why anyone might think names like Crolznar Stardestroyer, Ondar Magmasoul etc. cool names. Perhaps it has something to do with english not being my native language. Another thing is that sometimes people misunderstand the meaning of exotism in names, creating totally absurd and difficult names which are not anything else but annoying to read.
Creative_Insanity mentioned that there is actually nothing wrong with the name Isaac, and I have to agree, since if the name does not give anything out (like with the name Stardestroyer you know to expect something from the character) regarding the characters nature it is all up to you to fill the void. On the other hand, a name like Isaac might not sit straight with some if it's used in a fantasy world wholly separate from our real one. You might consider giving the name some exotic features by shuffling the letters or adding some new.
