Rock Salt loaded shotguns
In my new thing, on the inspiration from Kill Bill Vol. 2, one of my characters gets shot with a shotgun full of rock salt.
I do know this much about rock salt:
-It doesn't kill you.
And that's it!
I was just wondering:
-Does it break the skin? (I can't really trust Kill Bill on realism)
-Can it infect?
-How bad does it hurt? (lol, hopefully some of you guys have tipped some cows)

Well, after seeing Kill Bill vol. 2, I can honestly say that it would probably hurt pretty bad. The movie was pretty out there when it came to realism, but I would imagine the pain that the bride was in was probably authentic.

Shoot yourself and find out. Or get a drunk guy and shoot him. When he is not drunk ask him how much it hurts, and oh yea! Take him to the hospital. -_-

We have a cemetary by me that used to shoot intruders with that stuff:
1. DEFINATELY breaks skin
2. I don't know about infection, but for your story you could always have it intentionally tainted with something....
3. Hurts REALLY bad. It is travelling very close to the speed of a bullet. It hurts, it swells, it SUCKS!

Not me fortunately, but more than a few of my friends described it well enough!

Airborneguy is definately on the money here. But I would stress one point about the pain factor. It not only hurts, but hurts worse than a normal gunshot because it is SALT. Anyone remember the old addage about "adding salt to a wound". There's a reason for it, and it isn't to make the booboo better. Basically the idea behind a rocksalt shotgun round is that it is less lethal and more painful. A definate hillbilly favorite.
