Hmmm, I don't know for sure, but it reads familiar. Sir Walter Scott's "The Pirate" comes to mind when I read it. The local Orkney Island bard told stories of the mermaids...

Dug this up...

I managed to find that quote in an interview with Graham Swift. I believe he is a British author, but I could be wrong. I didn't read the interview, just kind of skimmed over it. Here it is if you need to know:
