Over and under

This one gets a short intro. Back when I was looking after kids for a living I realised there was no mnemonic for teaching tying up shoe laces. There were some confusing stories about rabbits ears but what little kids need is not an explanation of the process but a simple verbal clue that helps them "keep their place". I made this up and have taught lots of kids to tie shoelaces with it. A while ago I taught it to a friend who went to Natal in South Africa and taught kindergarten there for a bit so it's traveled some as well.

Over and under and pull it down
Make a loop and take it round
Make a hole and push it through
Pull it tight thats what you do
Over and under and pull it down (last line optional for double knot)

Possibly the best known and most useful bit of composition I have ever done.

I must have read the instructions incorrectly - I had a loop around my ankles.

That's ok, I nearly corrected you by adding another 'o' to spell 'lassoo', that's how pissed I am lol

I can see why. I particularly like that fourth verse, and think it will help even me with my memory damage as I try to learn it. Then I will surprise my best friend as I teach it to her daughters covertly while babysitting. They are about at that age where it is time to learn to tie shoes!

Where do I send the royalties? *grin*

Thanks for sharing.
