I think one barrier to volunteering has already been mentioned in the thread: People don't feel qualified to be judges. Maybe we should hold nominations and then a vote on the judges, that way, no one will feel like they are bragging, being arrogant, or unqualified to judge, and there will be no calls of foul play or other such things that make prospective judges nervous.
Any thoughts?
P.S. We might need a new thread for this, especially if we want to solve this issue in time for the current Challenge to be ready for judgement by Thursday.

Just do it like the LM. Not too difficult. I'm sure there are 4 poets who can handle the job.

You're making it complicated. I was actually expecting that you'd offer to judge. You already have Eiji and I thought Baron would offer to since this was his brainchild. If you managed that you'd only need one more. You don't need a thread for a tortuous judge nominating experience and you don't have time for that, anyway.
Draft them if you must.
But I will not. I'm doing the technical aspects already...when the contest will be run this way, anyway.

well, the problem I see is that the judges are unlikely to be able to participate in the competition, and there aren't enough regular visitors to the poetry section to further restrict the number of entrants.
Why don't we just have a democratic vote, much like we have now. But those who do vote must offer a critique on the poem of their choice examining why it is the best?
I don't know, I don't have a problem with either proposal, but maybe it is safer to just "go with what we've got" until the next competition?

I think if this contest just goes ahead as the last one did then we caan set something up for the next one along the lines that Foxee suggests with more time to organise it properly.

Boy! things move fast when I'm asleep ...
Yes, I'm prepared to be a judge if wanted ...
Question: do judges post - or PM - all deliberation notes?
(This is the way it's done in songwriting competitions -
each contestant gets the judges' notes of their entry ...)
Or just opinions of the "top 3"?
Or the "number 1 choice"?
or not at all?
[edited to add] Ah, just spotted the answer in Foxee's explanatory post ...

Not necessarily ...
a judge simply cannot deliberate or vote on the entry submitted ...
there are precedents in other areas ...

I love to complicate things, it's more fun that way.
However, I am willing help to make it easy by offering to judge if nobody minds.

Cran, my suggestions are simply from how the Literary Maneuvers contests are run in the LM Coffeeshop here on WF. Sorry, forgot you were in Oz, sleeping!
I'd suggest that everyone have a look at how LM works although I did try to boil it down simply in my post.
Baron, you're getting judges now. You still want to wait or go ahead and try the judging on this challenge?
Maybe you all need to discuss it. Let me know when you have a decision on how you want to proceed, please.

Foxee, regardless of how this challenge is run,
I would bow to you and kiss your fingers if you could draw
the entries out of this thread, and repost them in a clean thread ...
with a clear topic title (like "Second Challenge - Food"?) ...
we have kind of messed things up with this discussion
about the mechanics, etc ...
As for a four judge panel, I would suggest aiming for a gender balance ...
if Foxee has ruled herself out, perhaps then Ms vodka?
or another female poet who feels confident to critique?

Okay, okay... so who's judging again? Baron, take the lead here, for the Goddess' sake!

Gracious Cran, I will indeed. Let me get the kiddos fed and tucked up in bed (about an hour or so from now) and I will gladly move the poems to a new thread.
The people who have volunteered so far to judge are:
Eiji
Cran
Ilasir
Unless I missed someone.

Thus far, the suckers ... I mean, volunteers ... are:
Eiji ... which is good, seeing he was the first winner,
and the selector of the subject for this one ...
Ilasir ...
and someone else ... wait, don't tell me ...
oh yes ... me ...
