The Lonely Lady

The lonely lady
sits sadly on her sofa.
In her lap; an empty
one pound heart-shaped
cardboard box of
light and dark chocolates,
his way of saying thank you for
fixing all our meals and doing all the dishes,
washing and ironing all our clothes,
raising our four children and helping them
with their homework,
cleaning and dusting and vacuuming and…..

Maybe, next year, if I learn to change
the sparkplugs in his car, I’ll get a
two pound heart-shaped cardboard
box of light and dark chocolates.

And maybe even a card.

Lol this reminded me of my grandparents, course my grand mere hated getting chocolate. She much preferred small trinkets and books.

A worthy scenario. The change in point of view between stanzas is a bit awkward. The fact the box is empty is the saddest detail of all. cheers.

That’s really sweet, in a weird sort of way...but it also is sad because to me it shows how unimportant those chocolates are, and how you're doing things that need to be done anyway, to get the chocolates. I really like the rhyming with "The spark plugs in his car" and "maybe even a card" it’s quaint.

Thank you T.R., glad it brought back some memories,
J.R. I was hoping someone would catch the fact the box was empty.
Alice thank you for you kind remarks as well
