Fantasies and Daydreams
The shadows of the willows
on the floating lily pads
adds a soothing touch to a
picture-post-card-perfect
image of tranquility
from my rock-chair
observation post.
Cooling my feet
in mossy green water,
my bamboo fishing pole
(with no bait or hook)
dangling in front of me,
I think of how quickly
summer has passed.
Pushing my straw hat back
I look up to identify,
and name,
the clouds that slowly
drift above me
like a holiday parade.
So much for fantasies and daydreams,
I tell myself, as I button up my
flack jacket and pick up my M-16,
(which moments ago was a bamboo
fishing pole) and head back to the war.
