Newbie poet, please offer suggestions....
I have been trying to write lyrics for a couple years now and getting OK at it, but never had any formal schooling in writing.
Can you suggest what sort of poetry, or writing exercises, etc. to work on to make lyrics better?
Thanks.

You know what, I wish I could. I've been writing lyrics since 1999 and I suck at it apparently for that's what people tell me. I don't know of any exercises or programs that will help but I know a songwriting organization that has experts that might be able to help you. www.justplainfolks.org. Good Luck!

I'd recomend "A Poetry Handbook" by Mary Oliver. It's easy to read, gives lots of examples, doesn't cost much, and is available in most bookstores.

My idea is to pick a topic then write down (or my favorite get a voice recorder) and record every word/phrase/anything that comes to mind when you think of that topic, don't stop to think, just the fist things that pop into your head, then go from there, what do the words/phrases inspire?

The Poety Handbook thing is prolly the better way for me to go. I am actually pretty good at getting ideas on paper. Better than most maybe even, but when I read thru some of the stuff here, all I could think about was "Wow, these people know how to write poetry". I feel like I am guessing when I write....missing some tools I need.
Just need to pick some books and start reading, I guess. Just don't want it to feel like homework! Ha.
