In Memoriam
Sixty years ago death fell from the sky
The people down below didn’t know they were to die.
They were all just women, boys and girls and men
That hadn’t done a thing to bring this curse on them.
A blinding flash of light was the last thing they would see
A shadow on the sidewalk is all they soon would be
A snapshot of terror, frozen in time and space
A memory of just how bad could be the human race
Horrifically beautiful the mushroom cloud arose
Like a Phoenix from the ashes of the people that they chose
To be the first recipients of man’s most modern tool
Designed to put an end to behaving like a fool
“Little Boy” and “Fat Man” (the President was told)
Would save the lives of thousands as the story would unfold
Of a new and awesome weapon that we’re not afraid to use
All this, it seems, would happen before the evening news.
On August sixth Hiroshima was leveled to the ground
But offers of surrender still could not be found
So on the ninth Nagasaki also would be hit
Seventy four thousand would be buried in that pit
Sixty years have come and gone it’s ancient history now
But we need to keep this in our memory some how.
The lesson learned in ’45 is worthwhile still today
God help us put an end to war if we can’t find the way.

Brilliant poem and a nice contribution to the annivasary of WW2. Nice imagery topped with great structure and good use of language. I have notthing to criticise, its perfect as it is.

amen to that, Psycho, amen to that... how pointless is it- us senslessly blowing the brains out of members of our own species??
Good poem, my man, and even better messege!

i'm so glad to see someone else calling for a commemoration of such atrocious use of the ability to kill our fellow humans, as i did with my '60 years ago' post, wayne... thanks for joining me in sorrow, anger, and remorse...
wouldn't it be nice if we didn't have to write about such things and could merely celebrate the beauty this planet has [had!] to offer?
love and hugs, maia

ok... then, i did it and i'm glad!
seriously, you're entirely welcome... it's the most i can expect from my work, sad to say... but better than nothing... best, of course, would be if those who are in charge here would stop the insanity, right?
triple hugs, m
