Metamorphosis
Imagine, if you will, a city without crime.
Will it ever happen? Not in our lifetime.
Now picture, if you can, a country under rule
Of honest politicians instead of by a fool.
The only thing that changes is the party and the faces.
No matter who’s in power they manage to disgrace us.
While dancing with the Devil they smile and just pretend
It might be bad right now but will be better in the end.
Don’t be fooled by idiots that claim they know the way
To solve all of our problems and let you keep your pay.
“We’ll only tax the wealthy.” We’ve heard that one before,
But somehow every payday it seems they just take more.
Maybe it’s time to organize like Wobblies did back when
The workers in the factories could not find a friend.
Strength in numbers is the phrase that comes to my mind.
Then perhaps we’ll finally see a change in our lifetime.

Pretty good, but I am unclear as to what "Wobblies" are?

Are you familiar with "Google"? LOL
the wobblies (IWW) was the nickname for the Industrial Workers of the World. One of the earliest and strongest labor unions in the U.S.

And in both US & Oz, we need them back. Those fights in through the last century for workers conditions & rights have or are coming to naught as govt & corps line up together to remove the hard-fought gains.
Corps are making record profits, year in year out, yet are constantly shedding the people who sweat to get the company up to those lofty levels. Govts happily raise wages so their cut in taxes goes up as the average joe moves up into the next tax bracket.
Corp leaders are making more money per day, personally, than most of us make in a year laong with bonus schemes like we've never seen.
Govts happily vote themselves pay increases in the tens of thousands per year & then argue for the average wage to come down & if they don't win that, well just increase a tax or two.
wayne, you've hit a nerve here. Good poem if it fired me up like this.

Thanks Mark. You are so right, especially about CEO wages and bonuses, it's downright obscene. By the way "happy 100th Birthday" to the Wobblies.

Ahhh.... I knew who the IWW were, but some reason the term Wobblies had never sank in. Now it makes sense, thanks for the clarification.
I wholeheartedly agree that the Wobblies need to return. I'm sure they could make things actually run at an almost honest level, forcing sorporations to do the right thing always, not just when they feel like it, or a lawsuit makes them. Today's unions just do have the inner strength to do that, though...

I'm not sure if I'm the best person to be giving poetry critique, but I think that in the second line of the first stanza, 'lifetime' should be changed to just time. 'lifetime' just didn't seem to fit in with the beat of it.

dream on, sweetie!... i'm not holding my breath, 'cause blue's not my best color...
would be nice, but not likely to happen in our or any other lifetime... human nature just doesn't metamorphose... only their physical form does, along with the shape of the things they use to kill each other...
but, if it makes you happy to think they will, ignore me and enjoy your bubble ...
love and sad hugs, m

How cynical are you Maia? Haven't you heard the old proverb: A Journey of 100 miles begins with a single step? I'm not saying we can make it "all better" I'm simply stating a starting point is needed before we can see any progress at all.
