The Burning Man
They gather once again
In the desert of Nevada
Like they have for many years.
Artists, musicians, photographers
Women, children and men
Making their annual trek.
They gather with a oneness of spirit
In Black Rock City
Singing, dancing and playing.
Joyously they unite as one
Setting the man on fire
And watching him burn to the ground.

Ditto. I assumed wicker. But then wondered if maybe ther's a hopi tradition or similar.
It reads well but the lack of background (for us aussies anyway) kinda leaves the meaning hanging.

I just googled "wickerman" and it seems somewhat similar, except burningman has a lot of people running around naked, something like Woodstock. Makes it more fun (grin)

I'd say this is an off shoot of the old English wickerman stuff.

Actually, the Wickerman stuff (which is in Scotland by the way not England) is an off-shoot of the burning man. Wickerman started in 2002, the burning man has been around since the 60s

ABSOLUTELY NOT Hopi!... i lived with them for a while, have studied their history and traditions and they don't do such icky stuff...
in the old celtic tradition, a person [victim] would be sacrified inside the wicker figure, to guarantee a good harvest the next year... just one of the stupid human sacrifice things manunkind has come up with, down through the ages...

Maia: I love that word you just coined "manunkind" how appropriate. Can I steal it from time to time?

not so much stupid as ignorant though the lesson was interesting because it wasn't just about fertility and all that but about sacrifice and the whole scapegoat idea you know 1 take on the sins of the many (sound familiar). Anyways not sure if its an actual thing or a kind of bastardization by film makers.

sorry to say, it was a real practice, danny... just like ripping out living hearts and playing ball with heads was, in mesoamerica... and lots of other icky stuff inhumankind has come up with since day one...
use my latest coinage with my blessing, oh marvelous mad-one! [notice the new one?... it's actually an oxymoron, which is apropos in re the race itself ]... i do such stuff all the time in my writings and it's all up for grabs by anyone who wants it...
