Today is My Birthday

Today is my birthday
Let's blow out the candles
And laugh
As the sound of ripped paper
Fills the air.

Let us cut the cake
And pass it 'round
As the kids run laughing,
Into the sprinklers.

Leave me now--
As day turns dusk--
To view your ghosts
I can still hear laughter,
Ringing.

Alone in my house
The silence overpowering
I'll stare at presents
Plates full of lone frosting.

To bed I will retire
In the reliable dark
Thinking
About past years
Regrets and triumphs.

Today is my birthday
But nothing's changed
I still lie
Alone, listening to the laughter
Echo through the halls.

Happy Birthday!

Hi Lonewolf...co-incidentally...today is my birthday too! (albeit I have celebrated quite a bit more than you have!) We Capricorns live to be a ripe old age...but get younger in the process!

Have a wonderful day!

Oh em gee!! I'm sooo sorry, guys! I wrote this in such a rush I didn't put a disclaimer on it or anything...it really isn't my birthday!!! My birthday is Sept. 22...I just wrote this poem because I was thinking about the "importance" of birthdays to me...I am so embarassed! Again, I'm sorry, but thanks Bea and Jp for the early Happy Birthday's! (It's almost my half b-day...does that count?)

Happy happy birthday to you though, Bea!!!

I didn't reply to this post initially because:
1. If I commented on the poem without wishing Happy Birthday (which I was sure it wasn't) it would seem impolite;
2. If I said Happy Birthday I would be going against my first instincts and embarrassing poor LoneWolf

Ohh, I like the "reliable dark thinking." Good stuff, LoneWolf.
