We Are The Loneliest Souls

We Are The Loneliest Souls
(an Ode)

I.
We are the loneliest souls
When we choose to walk
This Valley of Poets
We leave the planet
We pack our things
We carry our quills
And writing tablets
We know we are
The loneliest of souls—
We look back to our lives
At our dreams
At our illusions
And pull a portion
To share to every gathering’s
Dinner buffet—
So we all sup
On each other’s tears
Or laughter
Or adventures
Or misfortunes
We are the loneliest of souls

II.
We are the loneliest souls
When we peek in through
Teary-eyed
Because a husband cheated
Or a daughter sick
Or a parent died
Or a brother unkind
Or a friend
Simply walked away—
Teary-eyed because
We are happy
That love found us finally
When we are about
To stop searching
Happy enough
We could write a sonnet or two
And yet no one would read—
We peek in through
This Valley of Poets
Teary-eyed
(We know we are
The loneliest of souls)

III.
We are the loneliest souls
But not so much
When we flock
When we build
When we discuss
When we prove
When we tend someone’s garden
Before bedtime
When we wake up unmindful
Of our morning coffee
Because someone’s words
Are waiting to be gathered
We know we are
The loneliest of souls
But not so anymore
As we think of each moment
Of our lives
Which we wink into permanence
Portraits taken
For everyone’s viewing pleasure

IV.
We are the loneliest souls
No more
Nevermore—
Until some hints of reality
Reminders of the cruel world
Appear before us—
We return as fast
To our earth
Where we gladly
Bitterly accept
We are the loneliest
The loneliest of souls
(We leave the Valley
We snuff out
The little flame
Of our tiny candle
The small light
Of our microcosm)

Penelope is an unknown quantity at this point
This made me think of someone who stayed silent instead of airing their disputes. It also makes me think of someone who thinks everything can be solved by writing a poem. Neither is the case.

So true, but still we must write, and we must sing; for we are blessed by everything. -- William Butler Yeats

I continue to write as well. All this poem did for me was make me frustrated and the author knows why.

Well I liked it, and halfheartedly believe it, and wholeheartedly want to believe it.
