Fred's new friend

This is actually the 2nd in a set of rhyming naratives, the first introduces Fred and at the moment I'm waiting to hear if it's been accepted for inclusion in an anthology called 'A Twist in the Tail'. I should know in Aug/Sept. Any way, I hope you like it.

Fred’s new friend

Life down in the valley had been rather good
Fred’s training as ‘boss’ had begun.
He went to the wizard to train every day
In lightening, in rain and in sun.

His parents felt proud as they watched him come home
They told him he’d really done well,
‘If only your grandpa could see you right now
The tips of his wings they would swell.’

The days turned to weeks as his training went on
He knew it could take many years,
He had to learn tactics and when to stay back
And how to best overcome fears.

One day during lunch hour the wizard told Fred
This part of your trainings complete,
‘Your next stage of training will take place right there’
He tapped on the floor by his feet.

There suddenly appeared a map on the floor
It took Fred a bit by surprise,
‘What will I learn next in this place far away?’
‘I want to learn how to be wise.”

The wizard just smiled as he walked from the room
Still watching the map on the floor,
‘I will show you the route you will need to stick to,’
The wizard then stopped by the door.

‘You’ll start out from here’, Fred then studied the map
It seemed such a long way to go,
How long would it take? Would he be on his own?
There’s so much he wanted to know.

The wizard then told him to go home and rest
Tomorrow he’d start on his way,
Young Fred felt excited, a little scared too
Could he reach this place in one day?

His parents were sad at his going away
But they knew the wizard was right,
The morning soon came and they wished him good luck
And waved ‘til he’d flown out of sight.

He hadn’t gone far when a speck he could see
There on the horizon ahead,
He hoped it was friendly, a dragon like him?
Perhaps his ears too had turned red.

Young Fred went on flying, his speed he increased
He tried to catch up with the speck,
But what if it’s not what he thought it would be?
Would that prove the end of his trek?

His thoughts turned to home and the family he’d left,
How long would he be from his cave?
How much would he learn before going back home?
He knew he would have to be brave.

At last up ahead he could see the Blue tower,
The place he was told he should go,
He wondered how many like himself he’d meet
But then very soon he would know.

Below was the courtyard in which he should land
It looked all deserted and clear,
He landed and almost as soon as he had
A soft voice said you’ve nothing to fear.

Soon wizards and dragons were there in the yard
He wondered which one he had seen,
Fred noticed that none of their ears were the same
The first one he saw was bright green.

A wizard in red came and stood by his side
“I’m to be your teacher,” he said,
“My name is Aldolphus but you call me Sir,
And you, I will just call you Fred.”

Fred found that the lessons were fun from the start
To begin he learnt on his own,
He learned how big dragon’s breath fire from their throat
And how to set fire to stone.

Then one day a dragon came into his class
Her ears were the colour of gold,
“She’ll be in your class for the rest of the course,
Her ear colour shows she is bold.”

Fred asked her her name and was told it was Grace
They worked through the course really well,
By the time they were done they’d become best friends
They’d always be friends, you could tell.

It might not hurt to let us know sooner that fred is a dragon, I was confused by the referance to swelling wings, and at first confused by the flying. What may seem obvious to you can be lost to the reader...
