A man in possession of a wooden spoon must be in want of a pot to stir.
Short and concise... I like it! I'm not sure if you intended this but your use of the word "three"... does it reference to the three fates in Greek myths?
"Three gauges took the measure of the man": The fates determined his destiny at birth.
"Three short verses marked his passing": They told him of his demise.
"Three looked on beside his grave": His foretold death came to pass.
"He believed in the power of three": He prepared everything up to this moment. Maybe even satisfied his desires of earthly indulgence?
"Much good it did him": Not much of an interpretation here... perhaps he trusted fate to much and followed it without questioning or resisting it?
This is all total speculation. Sorry if it got a little long and was totally off xD.
Anyways, I really liked it! I would really love to see one more stanza, but this by itself is absolutely wonderful!! *thumbs up*
