You've stumped me with this one, MisterSpider. Unless you'd like to share some insight?

Made me think about something encrypted. Like in newspapers only give away fractions of truth, and shouldn't be too dominant of our views on the world.

Thanks. First, forget about all the hidden x's -- they are there only to format the poem correctly. I wanted it centered with lots of white space around it. On the page, there would just be the black letters. Second, this poem is inspired by Aram Saroyan's minimal poems of the 60s. They are like little riddles in that their meaning does not come all at once, but slowly and unexpectedly. I originally had a title, a real title, but took it away because it made it too obvious. It was called "Manhattan Autumn" if that helps.

    Uhm... newspapers... lots of fluff
    wanting of substance
    reflection of our day
    Insert pithy saying here.

It looks like to me like the word is fading out of existence. Is it a reflection on the fading relevance of the printed news?

That was my initial thought, which prompted my reply of teh internetz, but maybe my assumption was wrong.

Like any interesting poem, all interpretations are correct, or at least enlightening. My interpretation is as simple as Gumby states: it's the newspaper coming undone in the wind. A comment on the transient nature of print? An insight into how the medium changes while the news stays the same? (Note how "paper" flutters away while "news" stays in bulk.) My lips are sealed.

When you said Manhattan in Autumn, I thought of September 11th, 2001.
