    No Last Words

I'm haunted by those last frozen minutes,
All the world shrunken into your one room.
Your eyes so heavy, so battle weary,
It took a lifetime's love to open them.
You needed to take us in one final time,
Needed to let us know you felt us with you,
Enfold us in your strength once again.
Through my young crimes I watched you, thinking I
Could hide my childish sins. You challenged us
To look at ourselves honestly, humbly,
Gently. To meet others with that same gaze.
Now I'm haunted by that last minute when
You looked at me, willing me to feel it.
I didnt see it. I missed it- miss you.

I agree, you can feel the loss. Very nice, Jane.
Let's see if my above post is deleted without explanation. Wouldn't be the first time.

Thanks all! Angie, keep chipping away at it. Often my poems start from a few lines of inspiration that just occur to me but the rest of the poem that is built around those few lines can take a long time- sometimes I leave them for weeks or months then come back to them. I decided to experiment with sonnet form with this one & at one point thought it would never be a half decent finished job. I'm still tempted to tweak but really, are we ever happy?
