    fourteen lines

Full shops, fast feet, full bags, furious, forgot
Gifts bought, house cleaned, cupboards overflowing
Necks wrung, feathers plucked, feet hung, game shot.
Sparkling and shining glinting and glowing,
    Loads of empathy, pails of sympathy;
Spiritual love and holiness is in
    Public voices rise in cacophony
But there’s melody there beneath the din.
Why am I furious, what have I forgot
Sit down put pen to paper and begin,
    Universals challenge, write an entry,
It wasn’t on my Christmas inventory.

And this is why my family finished Christmas shopping early

I love the sonnet dude, esp. the listing of things and the ending of the poem.

this made me smile. Well done on your poetry contest promotion. I'd enter but poetry escapes my grasp most times, and the other, it just eludes.

    enjoyed

Sync, I am glad I got a smile, we do have a winner by popular vote but we call it a challenge rather than a contest. Speaking for myself , I would rather see six people challenge themselves and produce a piece of poetry in ways they are not used to than see one perfect winner. You are giving up before you start, go and look at the entries Baron and I have submitted and think "No universals means ...". Have some backbone, challenge yourself, it really does help development.

This has now led to a discussion in Bard's Bistro in the Challenge thread.

    Hi Olly,

fun and uplifting, what more could a tired old bard ask at 2 in the am. (smile)
a golden streak splitting the distant horizon,
a magnificent explosion of dazzling light.
    Stunning! Defiant!
...daybreak, and life is simply awesome.

yup, contest was a poor choice of words by me

I sometimes post in challenges. They push me close to limits, 100 words, key words used, a theme. I like the freedom of writing, but sometimes like the challenge of writing in confined rules. This is probably why I like the old school Haikus over the modern

Seeing a Haiku in the challenge would certainly make a change Sync, well within the rules though, go for it.
