    highway one

she walk down the long road
    knockin' on the door
    sweep the floor
an' get on with the next chore

    she come to the town
    near where the highway end
    an' see an old friend
    an' he glad
she come by that way again

    an' he remember the days
    when they had it all
    she untied her hair
    an' let it fall

I like this a lot. It has a wonderrful ambiance and as i read it, it felt like an old sepia photograph. Well done, stonefly.

I echo Sondra's sepia, perfect word. Wonderful use of dialect, Stonefly. Very nicely done, love.

I like this a lot. Excellent rhythm and I love the timeless feel to it. It seems like it's part of something bigger not revealing itself to me! Made me curious to good effect.

Nice little read. I enjoyed its simplicity.

I picture a tenant farmer or house slave in the South, walking in the dust alongside a paved road to meet somebody in town. She unexpectedly encounters and old lover. The economy of the words leaves a lot to interpretation. But the few words imply far more than what they say. Nice.

I pretty much got the same general picture as Edge did, very nicely done stonefly. The simplicity of this is where it's real strength and beauty lie.

I'm reminded of one of my favourite Howling Wolf songs, 'Highway 49'.

I thought of that archetypal Elmore James slide riff which introduces Highway 49.

    Dunna-na-Dunna-na-na-doo-doo. Ramblin' music.
