    Family

    The grocery cart wobbles slightly,
as they are wont to do -
    one wheel is slightly bent,
    just enough to annoy.

Look at what everyone is buying -
    three things of lettuce?
    Who is he kidding?
    That tummy says otherwise.

    Eyes look over the apples,
    so many different sorts.
Pick one up, feel its smooth skin
    it smells like the harvest.

Here, let's do this quickly -
    we need potatoes, onions, carrots.
    This will do for stuffing,
and for heaven's sake don't dawdle,
we need to pick out a turkey.

    Get an expensive one,
this only comes once a year.
    Shove sweet bread into it,
    roast until deliciously hot.

    Spread the good tablecloth on,
    no, not those candles -
    there, finally. Done.

    The cats are mewing pitifully;
    mommy, I am hungry.
The pies sit on the shelf to cool
and as the two of us sit,
I think: this is my family.
    It is not large,
    but it will do.

This is a lovely holiday piece, Damien. I am a bit confused as to whom is actually doing the speaking, mother/father or child, it almost seems to be switching between them, or perhaps I've finally gone over the edge. Things of lettuce is what threw me, Mom would say heads, the child more likely things, but not all of the language is consistent with kid speak. Regardless, still a lovely piece, and two people constitute a family in my book. Nicely done, hon.

    Best,
    Lisa
