Naming products in books - Writers Forum

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering what the best way would be to approach companies about naming certain products in my book.
My books are based on the outdoors and if a photo shows certain clothes or products do I need to contact that company for permission and should I expect it to cost me??

The article brings me to another point though, is there any benefits to product placement, Would a company pay for you to use their brand?. Alternatively would it be worth contacting a company for some freebie equipment you may want to mention in your book???
