Ok sometimes I have writers block and start writing stories and get lost as to where to go a lot of times. Here is one I started last year then the block came. Of course it needs your help and critiques as always. At least this is start maybe. maybe someday I will add to it or file 13 a person my age never knows.
The Unmasked Man
Detective Robins was looking at the security screens, watching a certain man as he pointed out to the other detectives.
“Doesn’t this guy in back holding the weapon look like he is in some kind of daze? Why is he not wearing a mask and the others are?”
As they watched the screen after the robbery the other man seemed to grab hold of the unmasked guy and whisk him away out the door, with what looked like was a struggling female hostage.
The captain blurted out “Ok now we have and ID of one man lets get on it and put and APB out on him. Hopefully when he is caught then we can shed some light on his unmasking.”
Dan Mallory found himself waking up in the dark time of night. He looked at his watch and thought oh my goodness my wife is going to wonder where I am. He got out his cell phone and tried to call but it hit battery low. “Damn,” He was parked in a break area off the highway. He had gone a long business trip that had taken him out of town. He remembered stopping here but it was earlier in the day. He didn’t think he would have slept this long. A few other cars were there also. He looked at his watch and the time was 11Pm.
Dan went to get some of the strong coffee hoping it would wake him up but was surprised to find that he was very unsteady on his feet. He sat back down to get some air and seemed to feel better and tried again this time not too bad but still a bit unsteady.
“You know you should not drink when driving!” An older lady said to him as she watched him walk to get his coffee.
“Madam I do not drink, I just overslept that is the only reason I seem unsteady thank you,” Dan said sarcastically back to the older woman. She left with a “Harrumph.”
He thought to himself, darn it Dan your not that mean. That he wasn’t very nice to that older lady. After steadying himself and getting some of that coffee, that he thought didn’t taste too bad after all. I must be tired thinking the coffee is good and smiled to himself walking back to his car.
Now that he was thinking, better he remembered he had a charger for his phone in trunk of car. As he approached car it seemed to be shaking. He shook his head thinking I am seeing things. The shaking stopped and he figured it was just him. Dan pushed the button on his keys, up opened the trunk, and out jumped a female who looked very pissed.
“Your one of them, your one of them robbers, stay away from me!” She yelled at the top of her lungs. She ran from the car to the restroom area but there were no police or security people, just some other travelers and she went right to them and asked them to call police.
Robbers? Police? What is she talking about Dan wondered to himself. How did she get in my trunk? Dan remembered he hadn’t stopped anywhere until he got this break area. His suitcase had been put in trunk back at the hotel, did she get in then, no, because he had put the suitcase in the trunk. He was still at his car and thinking what do I do now and looked back at it. Do I run? I haven’t done anything illegal.
In the back seat was his suitcase, which he thought he had put in his trunk earlier.
Back at the police station. “Hey we have a lead!”
A trucker had just called in saying some man had a woman in his trunk and she was calling for police. The detectives left in a hurry knowing where the break area was. It was not too far for them. They asked the trucker to block the exit until they got there and he was a bit reluctant but he said he would.
As the trucker started towards the exit and then turn to block it, a car zoomed around him on the grass. He did manage get a look at the license plate, or at least most of it. He called Police and they were not too happy that the car got away.
As Dan Mallory had got his coffee and got in his car with this other women from the trunk waving wildly at him and some obscene finger gesture, he just shook his head. ‘Weird people!” As he was leaving the exit, a truck looked like it was turning around in the exit area and Dan figured that he would just go around him not in too much of a hurry, but had to go up on the grass to get around the truck. Dan thought everyone was having a bad day as he finally got out on the highway. All the Tolls has been paid and he was glad they were over a he neared another exit and decided for some reason he was hungry. He stopped at a Sheetz gas station and ordered some food. Went out and this time opened his trunk carefully and no one was in it this time but his charger was still there. He charged his phone while nibbling on some food in parking lot. He felt a lot better now but kept wondering how the woman got in his car.
Dan was following pretty close to the 65 mile and hour speed limit. He noticed some police cars behind him with their lights on and sirens running. As they approached, he pulled over to let them pass.
The cop in the first police car was expecting a chase and was confused by the car pulling over and the driver waving them on.
Dan was very confused when one police car pulled in front of him and another beside him. He watched them get carefully out the respective cars and pull there guns and aim at his car. “What the F...?”
“Get out of the car slowly,” Dan heard one of the cops tell him. Knowing he hadn’t done anything wrong he opened the door slowly as suggested and got out of the car with hands held high as he usually saw on TV police shows.
“On the ground now, face down!” They yelled. He complied.
The next he knew they were handcuffing him and not being very nice about it.
“Hey guys take it easy and I hope someone can explain what is happening here? I need to call my wife now!”
Detective Robins is there also and yells at him, “You are under arrest for robbing the bank in town and kidnapping. He is read his Miranda rights.
“First of all I have never robbed a bank and what town?” Dan said, as he was terrified at what was going on with all the police cars. He did remember the woman in his trunk.
“Oh shit!” he took a deep breath.
“Ahhh but we have you on camera and can prove that Mr. Mallory,” Detective Robins answered.
“I have a wife, one young son, own my own home and financially secure, why the hell would I rob a bank? Can someone call my wife at this number please? 410-555-6789.”
